Adventure Bent gets a new look for the new year
The holidays are upon us, the new year is right around the corner and we’re starting the year off right with our biggest update to the Adventure Bent blog yet.
Over the last week, you’ve no doubt noticed some big changes around here. Everything is different!
Last sunday I flipped the switch bring our redesigned site online. It’s a whole new look for a new year and that’s not the only thing we’ve got planned for 2018.
If any of this sounds familiar, it should. I started working on the redesign back in May when I first told you about some of the changes coming your way.
More than six months later many of those changes are finally happening.
So why the change?
When I started the Adventure Bent blog back in 2016, I had no idea what it would turn into. Niecie and I had just completed our first big road trip in years, and I wanted a place to write about our next adventure.
At the time, I picked a theme that would make our content stand out. For more than a year the Dyad theme served us well, but anytime I wanted to add a new feature it often required tinkering with the code for hours. The code became such a mess that just adding a new feature risked breaking the entire site.
Since then the blog has changed a lot introducing all kinds of new content. I started writing about camping, overlanding, hiking. It became clear we needed a new look to match.
I’ve only just begun to roll out the laundry list of improvements planned for the new year, but here are a few of the big ones.
The new theme
It’s hard to talk about a redesign without mentioning our new theme.
I wanted to move the Adventure Bent blog to something that was a little more conventional than our old theme, but at the same time offered us a lot more flexibility.
We’re now able to create more immersive blog posts that put things like photo galleries, videos and other great content front and center.
I hope you going to enjoy what we have in store for you all in 2018.
Getting better organized.
Along with the all-new look, I changed how the blog is organized to make it easier to find your favorite posts. Adventure Bent covers a lot of content, and our readers are just as diverse. We wanted to make it even easier for you all to find the content you care about most.
If you like hiking and want to read our hiking posts, you shouldn’t have to search through a bunch of journal entries to find them.
Journal entries are now broken down into three categories, “Overlanding,” “Hiking” and “Camping.” You’ll still find our reviews and gear posts are still under “Gear,” and you can still follow our Wrangler build under the “Projects” tab.
Less intrusive advertising
We don’t like ads, and we know you don’t either. Unfortunately, we rely on advertising to pay for our hosting fees and offset the cost of our trips.
With our latest fresh we’re cutting back on the amount of advertising you’ll find in our blog posts.
You’ll still find a few ads sprinkled into our posts from time to time, but I’ve moved most of our advertising to the sidebar.
We’ve got lots of improvements we’re planning to roll out over the next few weeks.
- Updated logo
- More color
- Refreshed email newsletter
